Botox
Q&A

  • Botox first burst on the scene in 2002 when it was approved by the FDA to reduce the appearance of wrinkles between the eyes. Botox contains small amounts of a purified botulinum toxin protein that temporarily paralyzes the muscles, preventing them from contracting and forming deep lines.

Every time you squint, frown, or furrow your brow, you use muscles in your face that create well-worn paths in your skin over time. As you age, these lines grow more abundant, and deeper, especially as your skin begins to lose collagen and elastin with age.

Botox goes straight to the source of the lines and wrinkles by targeting the muscles that create them in the first place.

  • Botox is approved to treat the following areas:

    • Moderate to severe forehead lines

    • Crow’s feet

    • Frown lines between your eyebrows

  • During your consultation with Dr. Mikell, he reviews the lines and wrinkles you want to tackle, and he comes up with a plan. Dr. Mikell administers the Botox in one session, but you may need several injections to achieve your goals.

The entire treatment time is usually just 10 minutes, and you’re free to resume your daily activities directly afterward.

  • Botox goes to work quickly, and you’ll see results in 24-48 hours after your visit to Dermatology Associates of the Lowcountry. These results may vary, however.

Most patients enjoy the results from Botox for four months. As the Botox begins to wear off, you just schedule an appointment to come back for a touch-up.

  • Since Dr. Mikell administers the Botox through injections, you may experience some minor bruising and soreness at the sites of these injections. These typically resolve themselves within a day or two. While you wait, you can ice the area and take over-the-counter inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen.
